Thanksgiving – We Give Thanks
1 Thessalonians 1:2-7
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

The Big Idea: We Give Thanks for All of You!

  • We give thanks – making mention of you in our prayers.
  • We give thanks – remembering your conversion.
  • We give thanks – knowing God’s choice of you.

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Identify some things for which you are thankful. How do these compare to the items about which Paul gives thanks in 1 Thessalonians 1:2-5?

Digging Deeper:

  1. Paul begins by thanking God for the Thessalonian believers, then indicates he does this by making mention of them in his prayers. For whom do you give thanks? How do you fold thanksgiving into your prayers?
  2. Paul continues with thanksgiving because the Thessalonian believers gave evidence of a genuine conversion. Their faith “worked,” their love “labored” and their hope “endured.” How do faith, love and hope give evidence of genuine conversion?
  3. The ultimate ground for Paul’s thanks involved knowing God’s election of these believers. What is the doctrine of election? Why is this doctrine marginalized in the modern church? On what basis can you “know” of your own (or someone else’s) election?

Taking It Home: In a few days, many of us will gather with family and friends to give thanks. In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, make sure to give thanks to God for your family members in Christ. In the way of Paul, communicate to them what you are thankful for.

We want to extend a special welcome to visitors and guests, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.

Barry Strickland is based in Texas and focuses on prison ministry. Barry travels often to prisons and ministry conferences. Please be praying for his busy schedule and safety as he travels. Last week, Barry saw his dermatologist and had two spots removed for biopsy. Be praying for him, especially if these need more attention after the results.
