MESSAGE NOTES

The Rich Man & Lazarus
Luke 16:19-31
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

The Big Idea: A genuine conversion to Christ avoids eternal punishment.

What is Hades, the place of the dead?
How to understand suffering and torment in Hades?
How could one reverse such a destiny?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: What do you believe happens to people when they die? How have you come to that belief?

Digging Deeper:

1) What is Hades and how is it described in Luke 16:23, Matthew 11:23 and Matthew 16:18?

2) Michael Bird teaches that Hades contained believers and unbelievers before the Christ events. After the ascension of Christ believers go to Heaven and unbelievers remain in Hades. Hades is eventually thrown into Hell after the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  Discuss.

3) Purgatory promotes the idea that a person can be cleansed or prepared for Heaven by some temporary suffering in Hades. How does the great gulf (or chasm) which cannot be crossed in verse 26 correct such an idea?

4) What descriptions of Hell are especially moving? How does this cause you to weep and pound the table? Who can you identify who may be headed there?

5) How could the rich man have avoided such an outcome? A reference to repentance comes in verse 30, which is shorthand for repentance and faith. What is to be believed and lived to avoid Hades?

Taking it Home: Aspen Ridge Church has a partnership with the mobile food pantry of Mountain Resource Center. Consider volunteering to connect with such on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:15PM or invite someone in need to connect.
