Rediscover Church – Who Can Belong?
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
Crashing the Holidays
Question: Who can belong to a local church as a member of Christ’s family?
Big Idea: Family members who are born again and identify as such through public baptism.
You Must Be Born Again, John 3:1-8.
The Baptism Ordinance, Matthew 28:19-20.
Adopted Family Members, Galatians 4:4,5.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: In a few sentences, tell your story of coming to faith in Christ.
1) In Ephesians 2:1-7, a believer’s life is divided into two parts. First, we are dead in sin, then we are alive in Christ. Which words describe people before conversion? Which words describe believers after conversion? Who is the agent of change (v. 4)?
2) You didn’t choose your parents or siblings, and you don’t choose to be part of God’s family either. How does this truth humble you? What can you do to build relationships with your siblings in the faith?
3) What do adopted children receive from their adoptive parents? In what ways is conversion similar to adoption? How have you publicly identified with siblings?
4) Think of stories for a few Old and New Testament believers. Did any of them live the life of faith in solitude? How could you use these examples to encourage someone who is reluctant to join a church?
Taking it Home: What is necessary in order to really belong the church? What things do people sometimes think are necessary but aren’t? What is the process for joining your local church?
We would love to meet you at our Welcome Center in the lobby and share a gift and available opportunities. Our Pastoral team would also love to meet you and will linger in the front after the services to this end. You may let us know you were here by using a Communication Card found in our worship folder. We receive these in containers placed on tables in the Celebration Center.
