Spiritually Diverse Marriages
1 Corinthians 7:12-16
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
Question: How to conduct oneself in a spiritual diverse marriage?
If your spouse does not (yet) believe, but agrees to live with you, do not divorce.
If your “not yet believing” spouse separates, let them go.
How do you know whether you will save your spouse?
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: “Marriage is the building block of the church and society” – in what way does this ring true?
1) What does the Apostle Paul mean in v. 12 when he says in parentheses (I, not the Lord)? In what way does this portion of Paul’s letter carry God’s authority?
2) The term “unbeliever” is used in verse 12 for a wife and in verse 13 for a husband. It is clear these have yet to come to personal faith in Christ… although such is the goal in verse 16. What other term(s) could be used to describe those still on the way to faith?
3) Instead of a believer being “defiled” by a spouse who does not yet believe, the opposite takes place. The unbeliever is made holy (verse 14) by the believer as are the children. What does this not mean? What does this mean? What difference does this make?
4) The Apostle Paul grants an exception for divorce in verse 15 for what purpose?
Taking it Home: If you are married to a person who has not yet embraced faith, you do not know whether you will be God’s instrument to achieve such (v. 16). Discuss with a trusted friend the best practices for the application of 1 Peter 3:1,2.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our ladies! We would love to meet you at our Welcome Center in the lobby and share a gift and available opportunities. Our Pastoral team would also love to meet you and will linger in the front after the services to this end. You may let us know you were here by using a Communication Card found in our worship folder. We receive these in containers placed on tables in the Celebration Center.
BABY BOTTLES IN THE LOBBY
Yearly, during the weeks that separate Mother’s Day from Father’s Day, (May 8 – June 19) Life’s Options, one of our ministry partners, makes baby bottles available for your donations. Just fill the bottles with the pocket change from wherever you drop your coins each day and return the filled bottles to church by Father’s Day, June19. Your small change makes a big difference!
OUR NEXT BAPTISM WEEKEND
Our next baptism weekend is on Memorial Day weekend, May 28/29. We will provide three baptism orientation meetings, with the expectation that someone getting baptized will attend at least one. These meetings will be May 12 at 5:00 PM; May 14 at 4:00 PM and May 15 at 11:30 AM. If you are interested, please indicate on our communication card or call the church office and we will provide the needed support and orientation.
SHINE ON! COMMUNITY TALK
Join us on Saturday, May 14 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in our Fellowship Hall as we have an open conversation about what foster care looks like in our community. We will be joined by Collaborative Foster Care, Royal Family Kids Camp – Littleton and Colorado Kids’ Belong to see what the church is doing and can do to help kids who have experienced trauma in their young lives. Free lunch for attendees!
SUMMER SCHEDULE CHANGES
Memorial Day weekend begins our summer schedule. We will adjust our service times, with Saturday services remaining the same and Sunday services combining into one 10:00 AM service. We will resume our regular schedule in the fall.
Aspen Ridge Church would like to thank Bruce Jr. and Mike Reinoehl for their part in expanding our south patio area. New tables and umbrellas are on their way. Thanks in advance to our properties ministry team for receiving and building such tables for wide use.
