MESSAGE NOTES

Relationships Under Construction
1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 7:1-40
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Question: What are the “rules” for relationships in God’s family?

The “rules” for married and singles, v. 1-16
The “rules” for living as you are called, v. 17-24
The “rules” for celibate or engaged, v. 25ff
The “rules” for death of a spouse, v. 39-40

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: What rules govern your relationships? What are some of your best relationships and what are the “best practices” for those relationships?

Digging Deeper:

1) As you review 1 Corinthians 7 what general impressions do you receive from this chapter? In your view, are these “rules” gracious, restrictive, or somewhere in-between?

2) It is granted that these “rules” are counter-cultural and not widely respected in society today. However, to what degree do Christians or Christian churches adhere to such rules? How could further conformity be encouraged or facilitated?

3) The Apostle Paul mentions the “pending distress” as a reason for engaged couples to be cautious about getting married. It is likely such “pending distress” refers to events surrounding the Second Coming of Christ. In what way should the imminent return of Christ inform our relationships today?

4) Paul gives counsel to those whose spouse has passed. How can this Christian community be (more) supportive of widows and widowers?

NEWCOMERS RECEPTION

We would love to meet you at our Welcome Center in the lobby and share a gift and available opportunities. Our Pastoral team would also love to meet you and will linger in the front after the services to this end. You may let us know you were here by using a Communication Card found in our worship folder. We receive these in containers placed on tables in the Celebration Center.

BAPTISM WEEKEND

Aspen Ridge Church is hosting baptism services this weekend. Please join us as we praise God and celebrate the baptisms of Eileen Shovlin and Bryan, Amy, Hayden and Eloise Green with cake in the lobby after each service.

BABY BOTTLES IN THE LOBBY

Yearly, during the weeks that separate Mother’s Day from Father’s Day, (May 8 – June 19) Life’s Options, one of our ministry partners, makes baby bottles available for your donations. Just fill the bottles with the pocket change from wherever you drop your coins each day and return the filled bottles to church by Father’s Day, June19. Your small change makes a big difference!

SUMMER SCHEDULE CHANGES

This weekend begins our summer schedule. We will adjust our service times, with Saturday services remaining the same and Sunday services combining into one 10:00 AM service. We will resume our regular schedule in the fall.

VBS DONATION HELP NEEDED!

We need paper towel tubes for making swords as we “Armor Up” for Vacation Bible School this year. There is a donation basket in the Lobby, and we would really appreciation your help with collecting this item by Sunday, June 12.

NEW SERMON SERIES BEGINNING JUNE 4/5

Do you ever wonder what to do with the “hard sayings” of Jesus? These include the different cultural background in Jesus’ day, the finitude of our human minds and even the resistance of human hearts. Once we understand what He meant, we can receive His truth, turn from our self-centered ways and be transformed in a relationship with Him. We invite you and a friend to connect on a weekend (or online) with Aspen Ridge Church this summer for “The Hard Sayings of Jesus.”

KIDZONE CHANGES BEGIN THIS SUNDAY!

We are excited to announce that we will rearrange our classroom structure to better fit the needs of our children beginning Sunday, May 29. (Saturday services will remain the same with all children meeting in Room 110.) Ages will now be grouped as follows:
Infants and Toddlers; ages 0, 1 and 2 in Room 109 (Downstairs)
Preschool; ages 3, 4 and 5 in Room 110
Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades in Room 112/113
3rd, 4th and 5th Grades in Room 114
Our beautiful Nursery will now be a “Comfort Room” for parents with young babies.

DV8 STUDENT SUMMER SCHEDULE

Beginning in June and running through August we will have summertime student ministries, middle school Wednesdays and high school Thursdays both from 6:30-8:30 PM here at Aspen Ridge. Bring a friend and come join us! Sign-up for the parent newsletter is on the student’s page on the Aspen Ridge website for more details.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS)

Come join us at VBS as we “Armor Up in the Quest for the King’s Armor” and teach children about Jesus, June 13-17, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Contact Debbie with any questions. Online registration will open Tuesday. May 17 on the church website. Remember to register early, as we are expecting a full house!

UKRAINE RELIEF

You may know that Aspen Ridge Church has been communicating a service project toward our sister churches and their neighbors in Ukraine. The following link: https://converge.org/missions/world-relief provides more information. We are pleased to announce that our church has given some $6,000 toward this project! If you would like to give, you may do so with a gift to Aspen Ridge Church and an indication that this gift is for “Ukraine Relief.”
