MESSAGE NOTES

God’s Call is Radical
1 Corinthians 7:17-24
Kreg Kastelz

The Big Idea: God calls us to a crazy (radical) kind of life.

Paul is making an argument for singlehood over the married life.
Paul is calling all people to a life centered around God to the point of looking radical.
Are we living a crazy (radical) life for God?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Have you ever felt God calling you to something crazy (radical)?

Digging Deeper:

1) This passage indicates that living a single life devoted to God is better than getting married (see 1 Corinthians 7:38). Does this seem to be counter cultural? Contrast the pros and cons of single and married life (knowing that Paul already said the single life is “better”).

2) How must we structure our thinking to agree with Paul in this mentality? Do we equally represent singlehood and marriage to the singles in our lives? If we are already married, how can we structure our lives with this same mentality? (Remember, Paul is not calling married people to singlehood).

3) What are some other things we are called to as believers, that if lived out fully in our lives, would make us look “crazy”? What might be holding us back from some of those things? Has God laid any specific things on your heart like this?

Taking it Home: Think about the things you want to accomplish for God in this life, now consider Paul’s words “the appointed time has grown short … this world is passing away”. If you knew Jesus was returning in the next month or even this year; what things might look different in your life?

NEWCOMERS RECEPTION

We welcome Pastor Kreg Kastelz as our speaker this weekend. We would love to meet you at our Welcome Center in the lobby and share a gift and available opportunities. Our Pastoral team would also love to meet you and will linger in the front after the services to this end. You may let us know you were here by using a Communication Card found in our worship folder. We receive these in containers placed on tables in the Celebration Center.

ADOPT A STUDENT FOR SUMMER CAMP

In the next month students will be attending two separate camps, middle school camp June 5-9 and high school camp June 25-29. Both are hosted by Christ in Youth. We will have a table available in the lobby this weekend at all three services. If you feel inclined to adopt a student, please stop by and grab a student’s name. The slips will indicate when you should stop back and drop off snacks or notes for the student. Make sure to pray for them over the week of camp (and honestly the students could use prayer after that too)!

BABY BOTTLES IN THE LOBBY

Yearly, during the weeks that separate Mother’s Day from Father’s Day, (May 8 – June 19) Life’s Options, one of our ministry partners, makes baby bottles available for your donations. Just fill the bottles with the pocket change from wherever you drop your coins each day and return the filled bottles to church by Father’s Day, June19. Your small change makes a big difference!

THE BRIDGE

This Sunday, May 22 from 4:00-6:30 PM we will host a session of “The Bridge” here at the church. This is a meeting for people wanting to know all about Aspen Ridge, its ministries, small groups and more. If you are interested in attending, please see a member of our pastoral staff! Childcare/dinner are provided.
