Matthew 5:48 – You Must Be Perfect
How Must You Be Perfect?
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: You are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
The problems – Jane Austen.
Possibility #1 – Humans are to be mature and complete in fulfilling their God-given design.
Possibility #2 – Humans are to be absolutely perfect in the presence of God.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: “Pictures of perfection… make me sick and wicked.” React to this quote from Jane Austen.
1) Some of us struggle with tendencies toward perfectionism. What is perfectionism and in what way(s) may people struggle with this?
2) One possibility includes the idea that people are to be complete and mature. Review James 1:4 and discuss how trials develop a resiliency that James describes as “perfect and complete.”
3) In Philippians 3:15, maturity has to do with ways of thinking. Ask God to reveal patterns of thought that lead to maturity and patterns of thought that do not lead to maturity. What do you discern?
4) The context for the Sermon on the Mount leads one to believe that sinless perfection is not possible in these mortal bodies. How do you understand “hungering and thirsting for righteousness” and “forgive us our debts”?
5) If a person is positionally “in Christ,” the benefits of Christ’s righteous life and substitutionary death apply by faith. How does a person come to be “in Christ”?

We receive these in containers placed on tables in the Celebration Center.

Evergreen has an especially high percentage of people who are “Booming with Confidence.” These include people who are well-educated, affluent, living in upscale housing, investors, tech apprentices and environmental philanthropists. Which neighbors do you know who may be described this way?
