An Apparent Contradiction?
Matthew 12:30; Mark 9:40
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
Matthew 12:30 “Whoever is not with me is against me…”
Mark 9:40 “For the one who is not against us is for us.”
Question: How do we understand this apparent contradiction in Jesus’ teaching?
Context for Matthew 12:30
Context for Mark 9:40
Resolving the matter
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Do you ever hear people describe supposed contradictions in the Bible as a reason not to believe? If so, just what supposed contradictions are most often mentioned?
1) In this message we approach an “apparent contradiction.” Why is the term “apparent” important? What is the law of noncontradiction and why is it important?
2) The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (broad context for Matthew 12:30) appears to describe a final and complete rejection of Jesus Christ, in whom sins are forgiven for those who believe. If a person finally and completely rejects Christ, what hope exists for their forgiveness?
3) The context for Mark 9:40 relates to the original 12 followers of Jesus. Must a person be among the 12 in order to follow Jesus? What “fruit” was on display that was lacking even among the disciples?
4) How do the respective contexts of these passages resolve the apparent contradiction?
Taking it Home: Be grateful for other persons or churches who herald the message of Jesus Christ. Take stock if you are resistant or apathetic to Jesus Christ Himself. Realize the danger of “no man’s land.”
We would love to meet you at our Welcome Center in the lobby and share a gift and available opportunities. Our Pastoral team would also love to meet you and will linger in the front after the services to this end. You may let us know you were here by using a Communication Card found in our worship folder. We receive these in containers placed on tables in the Celebration Center.
Our next baptism weekend is on August 20/21. We will provide baptism orientation meetings, with the expectation that someone getting baptized will attend at least one. If you are interested, please indicate on our communication card or call the church office and we will provide the needed support and orientation.

Aspen Ridge Church leaders believe God is stirring us toward a church-wide emphasis this fall called “Rediscover Church.” Since the COVID 19 pandemic, it appears God is awakening an increasing number of people to re-consider the value of church for themselves and their families. God has used the turmoil and division of the past few years to interest a new generation in the need for, and the value of, the local Christian Church. We believe this becomes an occasion to listen to God’s Word and apply His directives for connecting with His people. Look for more in the coming weeks about this initiative.
