MESSAGE NOTES

Taking Up The Cross
Mark 8:34
Lawrence Pridmore

Question: Why follow Jesus if it means denying ourselves and taking up our cross?

Why is Mark 8:34 a “hard saying?”
How are we supposed to interpret this saying of Jesus’?
The scandal of the cross.
How do we apply this verse to our lives?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

My Story: As Aspen Ridge has been studying the Hard Sayings of Jesus, have you encountered any that have challenged you? If so, have they challenged you in your previous understanding of the Bible or in your lifestyle?

Digging Deeper:

1) Why is Mark 8:34 a hard saying? Is this a familiar Bible passage for you or is it shocking like it would have been for Jesus’ disciples?

2) At first, the reality of Jesus’ crucifixion would have been embarrassing and scandalous to the disciples. After all these years, why would this message still be challenging for the world around us to understand?

3) We hear a lot of historical “holy men” and modern-day leaders and “influencers” on social media promise that if we follow them, then we can lead a life without pain and hardship. How does this differ from the message of Jesus? What do you see if you read even a few of these passages: Acts 5:41, Romans 5:3, 2 Corinthians 12:10, Colossians 1:11, Colossians 1:24, Hebrews 10:34, James 1:2 and    1 Peter 4:13?

4) What does “deny yourself and take up your cross and follow Christ” mean to you specifically today?
