MESSAGE NOTES

Love Your Enemies
Matthew 5:44
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Question: How does one begin to apply this “hard saying” of Jesus Christ?

Understand your need for a Savior.
Expect to have enemies and hard times.
Challenge common misconceptions.
Envision loving heroes of the faith.
Seek the good of your enemies.

Applications:

  • Accept the fact that you will (and do) have enemies.
  • Choose to forgive while respecting boundaries.
  • Approach your critics.
  • Pray for your enemies.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: “Once upon a time, I thought my life would be peaceful and full of serenity, I thought that if I lived a good life, all my relationships would be marked by peace.”  Discuss.

Digging Deeper:

1) How does the “my story” way of thinking hold up when evaluating the life and ministry of Jesus Christ?

2) If Jesus had enemies, and if you are a follower of Jesus, how likely is it that you will have enemies?

3) What are some common misunderstandings about “your enemies”?  Further, what does loving enemies in the way of Jesus NOT mean?

4) Identify some loving heroes of the faith and think about what draws you to these examples?

Taking it Home:  Accept such realities… Decide to forgive… Approach your critics… Pray for those who persecute you by name.
