MESSAGE NOTES

Look Up to the Son of Man
Revelation 1:9-20
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Question: How does the Son of Man reveal Himself to His servant John?

The servant who received the vision, v. 9-11.
The vision of the Son of Man, v. 12-16.
The consequence of the vision, v. 17-20.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Have you read a book or seen a movie which claimed to include a vision of Jesus? What features are common to these visions?

Digging Deeper:

1) John received a revelation of Jesus Christ (1:2). He identifies with God’s people in many ways (1:9). It appears his presence on Patmos is a penalty by the Roman Emperor for faithful Christian teaching. In what way does this make him a credible witness?

2) The vision appears to relate to the Son of Man appearing before the Ancient of Days in the Old Testament (Daniel 7:9-14). However, in John’s vision certain qualities of the Ancient of Days are applied directly to the Son of Man. What does this say about the identity of Jesus Christ?

3) On a popular level, visions of Jesus are not unlike what was seen in the 2014 movie “Heaven is for Real.” However, such visions are quite unlike what is found in this passage (Revelation 1:12-16). In what way is this vision different?

4) The Son of Man stands among seven angels assigned to the seven churches (1:11, 20). What assurance do you receive knowing that the Son of Man identifies with local churches, and assigns an angel to each?

Taking it Home: John fell at his feet as though dead. When is the last time you were prostrate before Jesus Christ? What kind of comfort and assurance have you received from the Son of Man who has the keys of death and Hades?

SANCTITY OF LIFE / SHINE ON! COMMUNITY TALK
