The Treasure is Free
Romans 8:1-4
Todd Ickes

The Big Idea: The treasure vindicates and gives life!
The Big Question: Are we willing to receive it?
Discovering the Treasure
Beware of Counterfeits!
Receiving the Treasure

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Christmas can be a wonderful time of year, it can also conjure up many different types of responses and emotions in us. Is Christmas a time of true joy for you or a time of resignation or loss? Why? Discuss.

Digging Deeper:

  1. The world continually tells us to “do more” and is quick to offer ways to “have the best Christmas ever” by offering strategies of bigger and better meals, gifts and gatherings. Yet, busyness and performance can cause us to miss the very thing we need. What do you find yourself truly longing for this Christmas?
  2. Have you ever felt condemned? Unworthy? Unlovable? Disappointed? Like you constantly fall short or never measure up? How do you respond in those moments? Read Romans 8:1-4. How can we practically receive the gift Jesus is offering us this year to rest in his finished work? Are there things you need to let go of? Things that you need to invite God to heal and restore in your heart this Christmas?
  3. Have you ever been given a “gift” or “won” something only to find out it wasn’t truly a gift? Discuss. What effect did that experience have on you?
  4. What is the most meaningful gift you’ve ever been given? What made it so meaningful? Was it difficult or easy to receive? Is it harder for you to give a gift or receive a gift? Why? Discuss.

We welcome Todd Ickes as our speaker this weekend. Todd is a member of our church and of our preaching team. We want to extend a special welcome to visitors and guests, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Please visit the Welcome Center to get church information and receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.

Celebrating the birth of our Savior is special!  Let’s offer our best for those joining us for our Christmas Eve services – homemade goodies.  If you could provide 2-3 dozen homemade cookies or candies on a pretty plate, labeled with your name, please let us know at [email protected]

Our Christmas Eve candlelight services will be held at 3:30 PM and
5:00 PM, with childcare available in the nursery for ages 0-2. There will also be a special message time during services for children, as well. We would love to celebrate Christmas with old and new friends. This is a great time to invite neighbors to find a home in Christ together!

As 2018 comes to a close, we celebrate our Savior’s birth and praise our Father for every good and perfect gift. We reflect on the great things God is doing at Aspen Ridge Church and need to remember those who unselfishly serve us week in and week out. To demonstrate our appreciation, there will be a love offering during the remaining weeks of December and then we will present a gift to each staff member at the end of the year. Please note “staff gift” on your check and or electronic gift. The elders thank you for your support.

Thank you for your outpouring of love in our Giving Tree project this year, for our ministry partner, Life’s Options. We are still receiving gifts through Christmas Eve and have gathered almost $1500 as of December 20! We are thankful for God’s blessing and sending these gifts with our prayer that each one will bring hope throughout the year.

We’d like to share the gift of small groups with you this season. We have sermon-based small groups, topical and fun groups, such as ice skating. Please contact Eric Krajewski to ask which small group gift has your name written all over it!

Our next baptism weekend is scheduled for January 19/20. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact the church office to discuss scheduling your pre-baptism interview. Interviews are scheduled for 4:00 PM on Saturday, January 5 and 12 and 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 6 and 13. You are only asked to attend one of these sessions.

If you are interested in finding out more about life at Aspen Ridge Church and how you can get involved, you are invited to the next session of The Bridge,January 13 from 4:00-7:30 PM. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall downstairs and would love to have you join us!

Are you into winter sports? Do you pray for snow? Have you felt a nudge from God to lead a fun small group this winter? Skiing, ice-skating and snowshoeing are a few ideas. Please talk to Eric Krajewski, our Director of Small Groups, about your idea!

Please remember to pray for all of our missionary families this holiday season. Many of them are very far from family and friends and we ask the Lord to keep them safe and give them a blessed holiday.
