MESSAGE NOTES

“Before Abraham was, I am”
John 8:58
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Question: How does Jesus address a resistant audience?

Jesus describes resistance, v. 31-38
Jesus addresses misguided identity, v. 39-47
Jesus receives racial slurs, v. 48-57
Jesus declares His deity, v. 58

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: How do you define yourself? What gives you a sense of identity?

Digging Deeper:

1) On the one hand, Jesus addresses those who believed in Him (8:30-1). On the other hand, He describes these same persons as slaves to sin (v. 34), indifferent to His word (v. 37), children of the devil (v. 44) and liars (v. 55). How do you put these apparently contradictory descriptions together?

2) Jesus’ audience defines themselves from and through their genetic material (v. 39). However, Jesus defines them in another way. How does Jesus’ approach inform this generation, which seeks identity in race, orientation, gender or otherwise?

3) In the absence of sound reason, the Jews accuse Jesus of being bi-racial and/or demon possessed. How does Jesus respond to these accusations (v. 49ff)? What did the message affirm was Abraham’s vision of Jesus’ day (v. 56)?

4) On what basis is it clear that Jesus asserts His own deity (v. 58-9)? Why is the deity of Christ vital to the Christian faith?

Taking it Home: Read this passage daily in the week(s) leading up to Christmas. Believe Jesus is God and receive Him as the risen Lord and only Savior.
