MESSAGE NOTES

The Rate for the Job
Matthew 20:1-16
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Review the parable, v. 1-16.

The Big Idea: God may give either justice or grace (not injustice) on Judgment Day.

God may give grace, v. 7-9.
God may give justice, v. 10-12.
God does not owe any human being.
God cares for people more than things.
Many who are last will be first.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Have there been times when you have struggled with a real (or perceived) injustice at work? How did it feel? What did you do?

Digging Deeper:

1) Review the complaint given by the workers to the employer (Matthew 20:11-12). In what way may their complaint have grounds or substance?

2) The owner was not unjust. The justice of God is a reason He is praiseworthy (Genesis 18:25). However, justice will not serve as a foundational basis for a relationship with God. If He were simply just with human beings, none would be saved.

3) In the response of the owner, note the latitude and prerogative he retains to give unmerited favor on the last group hired. What is grace? How does Ephesians 2:10 teach that salvation “by grace through faith” is a gift?

4) In this parable, the owner cares more for people than he does things. Otherwise, he would NOT have paid the final group a day’s wage. How does this attitude compare to the older son in Luke 15, unable to rejoice over the provision of a party upon the return of his younger brother?

Taking it Home: Write down everything that God owes you. Then turn around and begin to write about what you owe God. If you struggle with a “bad eye” (coveting or jealous), renounce such an attitude this week.

RE-DISCOVER CHURCH!

Aspen Ridge Church leaders believe God is stirring us toward a church-wide emphasis this fall called “Rediscover Church.” Since the COVID 19 pandemic, it appears God is awakening an increasing number of people to re-consider the value of church for themselves and their families. God has used the turmoil and division of the past few years to interest a new generation in the need for, and the value of, the local Christian Church. We believe this becomes an occasion to listen to God’s Word and apply His directives for connecting with His people. Look for more in the coming weeks about this initiative.
