MESSAGE NOTES

Relationships Between Children & Parents
Colossians 3:20-21
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Question: What serves a healthy relationship between parents and children?

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Parents, when and how have you provoked your children to anger?

Gaining Ground:
1) One way not to provoke your children to anger is by telling them how much you love them. Further, when you instruct them not to do something, tell them why.

2) Another way not to provoke your children is by resisting the temptation to be too strict. When was the last time you said yes to your child’s request?

3) Inconsistency or lack of clarity could lead to provocation. How clear are you with your children about your expectations? What does consistency look like?

4) Some provoke their children by keeping them at a distance. How much time do you spend with your family? How often do you have a family meal together?

5) Make sure your life matches your words. When there are inconsistencies in your life, admit you were wrong. When was the last time you asked for forgiveness from your children?

6) Pay attention to your children’s friends. Let your house be a center of activity. When was the last time you hosted an event for your kid’s friends?

7) Set limits on your children’s use of electronic devices and phones. What time of the evening do your kids no longer have access to these devices?

Taking It Home: Learn from other parents who are further along than you. Connect with a small group called “Parents of Public School” children by making a note on a communication card.

NEWCOMERS RECEPTION

We would love to meet you at our Welcome Center in the lobby and share a gift and available opportunities. Our Pastoral team would also love to meet you and will linger in the front after the services to this end. You may let us know you were here by using a Communication Card found in our worship folder. We receive these in containers on tables in the Celebration Center.

PARENTING SEMINAR

You are welcome to join us for our Parenting Seminar this Saturday, August 19 in the Student Center. This seminar will occur opposite the 5:00 PM Saturday night service, continue with a dinner for all attending (including children) and wrapping up after dinner with a Q&A session. We have several Aspen Ridge couples who will be sharing wisdom about Christian parenting today and will be beneficial for parents of all ages!

PRAYER PROMPT

Since our weekend services include a focus on parenting from Colossians 3:20-21, we would like to invite each of you to pray for God’s blessing upon families this week. Pray that Christ will be the center of families, with each person a welcome member. Pray for students who are entering a new year of school with an opportunity to learn and grow in powerful ways.

ENTRYWAY CONSTRUCTION

You may notice construction in our church entryway. We are arranging for the installation of a coffee bar to improve the weekend experience of guests and regular attenders. Thank you for your patience with us as we make these upgrades.
