DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: How does our harvest field relate to the Rich Young Ruler? How about you?

Digging Deeper:

1) Review what you can learn about the Rich Young Ruler from the text. These include some degree of conflict within, a lack before Jesus Christ and malaise or despair. Discuss.

2) Jesus does not say he is not good. Instead, He challenges the Rich Young Ruler’s idea of being good enough. How good is good enough? Suggested answer: it all depends on context.

3) To what degree did this young man believe he obeyed God’s commandments? Jesus asserts that he lacked something. It appears even good things may replace the best thing. How did Jesus’ invitation seek to reveal competing loyalties and affections in this man’s heart?

4) Jesus looked at him and loved him. This love was not simply good intentions. Rather, it predicts Jesus giving up His wealth and making the ultimate sacrifice. In what way did Jesus do just that?

5) How does someone resist materialism? Where can you grow in your contentment quotient?

Taking it Home: Salvation is NOT possible as a human achievement. However, it is possible with God and as a supernatural achievement through Christ. What are the 5 Solas? How can you share one of these this week?

WHO IS THE TOP GUN?

Have you seen a good movie lately? Please check out our new blog post on the Top Gun sequel that came out this summer located at www.aspenridgechurch.org/blog/who-is-the-top-gun/ and let us know your thoughts. If you have a love for movies and this church, would you consider leading a “movie night” small group? Our Small Groups Director, Eric, would love to talk to you more about this opportunity.

RE-DISCOVER CHURCH!

Aspen Ridge Church leaders believe God is stirring us toward a church-wide emphasis this fall called “Rediscover Church.” Since the COVID 19 pandemic, it appears God is awakening an increasing number of people to re-consider the value of church for themselves and their families. God has used the turmoil and division of the past few years to interest a new generation in the need for, and the value of, the local Christian Church. We believe this becomes an occasion to listen to God’s Word and apply His directives for connecting with His people. Look for more in the coming weeks about this initiative.

SMALL GROUP OPPORTUNITIES

In the coming weeks Aspen Ridge Church will present and describe various small group opportunities. This will be a great time of the year to connect with a small group. If you have questions or would like to have a preview, please contact Eric, our Small Group Director.
