MESSAGE NOTES

The Sign of Jonah
Matthew 12:38-41
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

A “type” of something yet to come – introduction.

Question: In what way is Jonah a type of Jesus Christ?

An elect of God given over to death so many could be saved.

An appointed person languishing in the grave for three days.

God’s man risen from the grave to do pastoral work.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: What pointed memories do you have about the way your family celebrated Easter?

Digging Deeper:

1) Our teacher acknowledged that this weekend’s message was intended for those who believe in God. What reason(s) for faith caused you to first believe in God?

2) The passage is about a “type” or foreshadowing of someone to come. What examples in the message best illustrated the definition of “type”?

3) How was Jonah an “elect of God given over to death so many could be saved”? In what way was this type realized in Jesus Christ?

4) How was Jonah an “appointed person languishing in the grave for three days”? In what way was this realized in Jesus Christ?

5) How was Jonah “risen from the grave to do pastoral work”? In what way was this realized in Jesus Christ?

Taking It Home: Isn’t now the time to cross the line of faith? Go public with your faith by telling another person. Connect with a new small group or weekend series.
