MESSAGE NOTES

Shoulder to Shoulder
Luke 24:28-35
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

The Big Idea: The risen Jesus pursues pilgrims who leave the company of faith.

Context
Near the Village
Response of Faith

Step 1 – Discern an internal work of God in your life.
Step 2 – Match this internal work to an external company of faith.
Step 3 – Make a public declaration of your faith in Jesus Christ.
Step 4 – Share your faith story with a neighbor or acquaintance.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: How do you commonly celebrate Easter with personal or family traditions?

 Digging Deeper:

1) It appears that division among followers of Christ (v. 11) becomes an occasion for these two pilgrims (v. 13) to leave. In your opinion, what effect have divisions in God’s family had upon a waiting and watching world? How should these differences be approached?

2) These pilgrims are commended for not being alone; further, they welcome a third party without (yet) knowing His identity. They were conversational and invitational. Who has God placed in your path and what steps can nurture these relationships?

3) This passage describes an internal work of God that was recognized (were not our hearts burning within us?) in verse 32.  Regeneration is an inward and invisible work of God in human hearts that results in new spiritual life. Read Titus 3:5,6 and discuss God’s inward work. To what degree has this occurred in your heart?

4) These pilgrims rose and returned to Jerusalem to connect with the eleven disciples and others in the company of faith (v. 33,34). The internal work of God was matched with an external company of faith.  In what way has such matching occurred in your life?

Taking it Home: Review the four “responses of faith” and determine which one best describes your next step.  Take that step this week.

NEWCOMERS RECEPTION

We would love to meet you at our Welcome Center in the lobby and share a gift and available opportunities. Our Pastoral team would also love to meet you and will linger in the front after the services to this end. You may let us know you were here by using a Communication Card found in our worship folder. We receive these in containers placed on tables in the Celebration Center.

Sign-up for our VBS volunteers continues this weekend! Come join us as we teach children about Jesus, June 13-17, 9:00 AM – noon. This is an incredible opportunity to serve! Volunteer training will be held after service on Sunday, June 5 with a free lunch provided. Please stop by our table in the lobby and see Debbie with any questions.

DECORATIONS

Aspen Ridge Church would like to thank Dena Lucci and her crew for providing beautiful Palm Sunday and Easter decorations in our Celebration Center. Thank you, Dena!

OUR NEXT BAPTISM WEEKEND

We have received interest in providing another baptism service, praise God! We will do so on Memorial Day weekend, May 28/29. We will provide three baptism orientation meetings, with the expectation that someone getting baptized will attend at least one. These meetings will be May 12 at 5:00 PM; May 14 at 4:00 PM and May 15 at 11:30 AM. If you are interested, please indicate on our communication card or call the church office and we will provide the needed support and orientation.

ASPEN RIDGE CHURCH GIVING

The leaders of Aspen Ridge Church would like to thank those who consider this church their home and support things financially with generous gifts. We receive our gifts in the silver containers on the tables in the back row. If you are a guest this weekend, or are still deciding on a local Christian church, please feel no obligation to give. We are delighted to have you!

NEWCOMER’S EAT & GREET

Are you interested in getting to know more about Aspen Ridge Church? Pastor Jeff and Mary will host this informal gathering at their home on Sunday, April 24 at 2:00 PM. The address is 7183 Pinewood Drive in Evergreen. We would love to connect with you and hear more about your interests/desires. Please contact the church office to RSVP.

MOPS HOP OUTREACH & SUPPORT

Aspen Ridge Church would like to thank those who helped make our “Aspen Ridge Church MOPS Hop” a success this year. This includes Becky Kastelz, Kyndall Nixon and the many team members of our MOPS ministry. Further, at least three Aspen Ridge small groups provided practical support to this outreach. Thank you to all who served this community event.

RELATIONSHIPS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

After Easter, Aspen Ridge Church will present a series entitled “Relationships Under Construction.” We will give special attention to building constructive relationships between/among the sexes. It will be a comprehensive look at different types of relationships: husbands/wives, friendships among singles, spiritually diverse marriages and people who aspire to marriage. Wise counsel will be found in 1 Corinthians 7.

UKRAINE RELIEF

You may know that Aspen Ridge Church has been communicating a service project toward our sister churches and their neighbors in Ukraine. The following link: https://converge.org/missions/world-relief provides more information. We are pleased to announce that our church has given some $6,000 toward this project! If you would like to give, you may do so with a gift to Aspen Ridge Church and an indication that this gift is for “Ukraine Relief.”

WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER

Please join us on Wednesday, April 20 for sloppy joes, chips and dessert. The cost is $3/person or $10/family. We would love to meet you there!
