MESSAGE NOTES

…to the Ends of the Earth – Equal Opportunity NOT Equal Outcomes
Acts 12:1-5
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

The Big Idea: Different outcomes provide opportunity for God to display His attributes.

  • Antioch Believers

  • Agabus & Judea

  • James, Brother of John

  • Peter

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: In what way do you see equal opportunity, but not equal outcomes, among your brothers and sisters, or as you observe life in general?

Digging Deeper:

  1. Human beings are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26) and with equal accountability before God’s eventual and ultimate judgment (2 Corinthians 5:10). God is just (Genesis 18:25), and human responsibility is an important reality in the scriptures. Discuss.

  2. God is never guilty of injustice; however, He may choose to bestow unmerited favor on some (perhaps best described by the term nonjustice). Among those described in this passage, upon whom does God bestow grace? What means does He use to do this?

  3. Review the different outcomes for the Antioch Church (Acts 11:21-4), people in Judea (Acts 11:27-29), James (Acts 12:2), Peter (Acts 12:3-17) and Herod (Acts 12:20-23). How do these outcomes become an opportunity for God to display different qualities?

Taking It Home: With which of these individuals do you most identify? What opportunity do you have to turn to Christ in your present circumstances? How may your circumstances be an opportunity to serve your neighbors?
