Acts – The Benefits of Opposition
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Opposition to the Christian Way may engender unity.
- Prayerful unity, v. 32.
- Generous unity, v. 32, 34.
- Testimonial unity, v. 33, 37.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Someone said, “opposition will either drive us together or drive us apart.” How have you seen this to be the case in families, nations or faith communities?
- Opposition drives the early church together, first in the form of prayerful unity. Review the preceding context for this passage in 4:31-32. Remember that the early church devoted itself to prayer in small group life as noted in 2:42. Spend time praying for those on your impact list.
- Opposition drives the early church together in the way of generous giving. How does the sacrificial giving of the early church (v. 32, 34) compare to what you observe today? Where are Christian people to begin making progress toward this ideal? Write a deed of trust that affirms God’s ownership of all your possessions.
- The first two questions deal with praying and with paying, which are incomplete without giving verbal witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ (v. 33). When was the last time you shared your faith story with a friend or co-worker? Learn how to build a faith story in the Contagious Christian small group curriculum, and practice on someone this week!
We want to extend a special welcome to visitors and guests, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.
If you are joining us for our Saturday evening service, please consider staying afterwards for our final Soup’er Saturday for this school year. There is no cost, and a variety of soups will be available. All are welcome.
LIVE IT OUT IN SERVICE: DV8 BUCKETS
This weekend, DV8 Student Ministries will have some buckets on display in the lobby. These “Welcome Buckets” were created with new neighbors in mind. If you know of a house for sale in your neighborhood, this is an excellent way to greet them. Pick up a bucket and share the love of Christ with your new neighbors by dropping it off as they move in.
SUMMER SCHEDULE CHANGES
From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, we will be adjusting our service times, with Saturday services remaining the same and Sunday services combining into one 10:00 AM service. We will resume our regular schedule in the fall. Check out Pastor Jeff’s blog post on the church website for more information.
OUTDOOR SUMMER SERVICES
We will have three outdoor services this summer on the second Saturday evenings in June, July and August. Please keep these services in your prayers and begin to think now about who you might invite. The first one will be the Saturday after VBS.
Join us for prayer on Sunday mornings, downstairs in the Fireside Room, from 10:15 – 10:40 AM. This is a special time to pray for our weekend services and the advance of the gospel. There is also a student-led group meeting during this time; please see Pastor Kreg for details.
GEMS GIRLS CLUB FUNDRAISER
On Mother’s Day, GEMS Girls Club will be hosting a bake sale as a fundraiser for the next school year. They will also have special Mother’s Day treats for sale. Please come ready to support this sweet ministry!
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!
Vacation Bible School is coming soon! On Monday, June 4 through Friday, June 8 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, we will shout and cheer through God’s mighty acts of victory, along with Go Fish’s Victory curriculum. Registration opens on our website beginning May 1. Volunteer sign-up is happening this weekend in the lobby; please stop by and find how you can help. We need over 60 volunteers to make this amazing ministry event happen.
GRADUATION RECOGNITION WEEKEND
During services on the weekend of May 19/20, we will be recognizing high school seniors that are graduating this school year. If you have or know of a graduating senior, would you please contact Kreg Kastelz by email to make sure he or she is recognized during these special services?
WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER
This is the final week for our dinner, as summer is upon us! Our menu will be baked chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad and dessert for only $2.50/person or $10/family. Come and enjoy!
SAVE-THE-DATE FOR FAITH DAY AT THE ROCKIES
Faith Day at the Rockies is Sunday, July 29 at 1:10 PM vs. the Oakland Athletics, with Rockies players speaking after the game. The post-game concert features Passion. Please put this on your calendar and watch for more details to come.
AUGUST 4: CHURCH-WIDE SERVICE PROJECT
We’re getting our hands dirty in our community at Evergreen Lake, downtown Evergreen, and Marshdale. We’ll spend a half-day serving these areas through projects to clean up some beautiful public areas. We are praying for those that serve and those that will be served. Please mark your calendar and consider how you might get involved!
LIVE IT OUT PROJECT: PRECEPTS
In the lobby, near the front office, there is a basket full of items that may be shared with those in need around you. Feel free to take a bag or two and share the love of Christ.
