Acts – Contagious Boldness
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Opposition to the Christian gospel engenders boldness.
- |A direct response to opposition.
- A prayerful response to opposition.
- A Spirit-led response to opposition.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: If you have been a follower of Jesus for some time, you have experienced opposition and persecution. If you are a comparatively new follower of Jesus, you are promised to experience such along the way. What sort of opposition to your faith have you experienced?
- Peter gives a respectful, direct response to the religious authorities of his day. In this case, and since the religious authorities forbade what God expressly commanded, Peter must obey God rather than this misguided human institution. Discuss.
- Instead of forming political resistance, Peter called for a prayer meeting. What was the essence of their prayer request (v. 29)? How does this guide and direct your prayers when facing opposition?
- When are we not to speak…or to speak with boldness? What limits are placed around our right to freedom of speech? When and how are we to speak about our Christian faith?
Taking It Home: David Wells says “Today, the church does not share [the apostles’] confidence, it does not have their courage, and it is not bold.” When and how can you be bold in the proclamation of your Christian faith?
We want to extend a special welcome to visitors and guests, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.
LIVE IT OUT IN SERVICE: DV8 BUCKETS
This weekend, DV8 Student Ministries will have some buckets on display in the lobby. These “Welcome Buckets” were created with new neighbors in mind. If you know of a house for sale in your neighborhood, this is an excellent way to greet them. Pick up a bucket and share the love of Christ with your new neighbors by dropping it off as they move in.
SUMMER SCHEDULE CHANGES
From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, we will be adjusting our service times, with Saturday services remaining the same and Sunday services combining into one 10:00 AM service. We will resume our regular schedule in the fall. Check out Pastor Jeff’s blog post on the church website for more information.
OUTDOOR SUMMER SERVICES
We will have three outdoor services this summer on the second Saturday evenings in June, July and August. Please keep these services in your prayers and begin to think now about who you might invite!
CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN CHALLENGE
There are still three weeks left to connect with our Contagious Christian Challenge within one of our small groups. This is a 6-week DVD series that is designed to help you effectively and efficiently share your faith, and we’re excited to hear the stories that come out of this challenge. There is much more to learn, and you can still join a small group for the remainder of this series. Contact Eric Krajewski for more information.
Join us for prayer on Sunday mornings, downstairs in the Fireside Room, from 10:15 – 10:40 AM. This is a special time to pray for our weekend services and the advance of the gospel. There is also a student-led group meeting during this time; please see Pastor Kreg for details.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL – CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!
Vacation Bible School is coming soon! On Monday, June 4 through Friday, June 8 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, we will shout and cheer through God’s mighty acts of victory, along with Go Fish’s Victory curriculum. Registration opens on our website beginning May 1. Volunteer sign-up is happening this weekend in the lobby; please stop by and find how you can help. We need over 60 volunteers to make this amazing ministry event happen.
GRADUATION RECOGNITION WEEKEND
During services on the weekend of May 19/20, we will be recognizing high school seniors that are graduating this school year. If you have or know of a graduating senior, would you please contact Kreg Kastelz by email to make sure he or she is recognized during these special services?
WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER
This week, our menu will be a build-your-own baked potato bar, salad and dessert for only $2.50/person or $10/family. All are welcome!
SAVE-THE-DATE FOR FAITH DAY AT THE ROCKIES
Faith Day at the Rockies is Sunday, July 29 at 1:10 PM vs. the Oakland Athletics, with Rockies players speaking after the game. The post-game concert features Passion. Please put this on your calendar and watch for more details to come.
LIVE IT OUT PROJECT: PRECEPTS
In the lobby, near the front office, there is a basket full of items that may be shared with those in need around you. Feel free to take a bag or two and share the love of Christ.
