The Height of Faith – The Blessing of Marriage and Money
Hebrews 13:4-6
Todd Ickes

The Big Idea: Marriage and Money should lead us closer to Jesus!

  • What is God’s intent in giving us marriage and money?
  • How marriage and money have been perverted.
  • Agreements we’ve made with marriage and money.
  • How to restore honor and contentedness.

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Research shows that a child’s worldview is completely established by age 13-14. Growing up – how were marriage, sex and money presented to you? What did that experience teach you about marriage, sex and money as a result? How have those views affected your life as an adult?

Digging Deeper:

  1. God desires for marriage and money to bless us. So where does the common perception that money is evil, and marriage is a curse come from? Discuss where this perversion comes from (John 10:10) and how we must be on guard against it (Ephesians 6:10-18).
  2. Hebrews 13:4 tells us that “marriage should be held in honor by all”. Is there a marriage that comes to mind that displays honor? What is it about their marriage that conveys honor? Discuss some tangible ways that we can restore honor in our own marriages.
  3. Hebrews 13:5 tells us to “keep our lives free from the love of money and be content”. Is there a person you know that does this well? What does it look like in their life?
  4. How has our materialistic culture shaped our beliefs about what we actually NEED? How can we restore a sense of contentedness in our lives and introduce others to the same? Challenge: Do we really believe that Jesus is ALL we need to be content, satisfied and fulfilled?

Taking it Home: Experience is a powerful (and many times painful) teacher, yet apart from God’s word it can quickly lead us astray. What agreements have you personally made with marriage and money? Take some time to write down what you actually believe. Do these agreements align with God’s Word? We must be willing to renounce agreements that are untrue and choose to agree instead with the truth of what God says. Our ability to receive and experience the fullness of the blessing God intends for money and marriage to impart to us depends on it!

Pastor Jeff and Mary are away in Southern California attending a family friend’s wedding. Pastor Jeff will return to the church office on Tuesday, January 23. If a pastoral matter arises, you may contact Pastor Kreg via his email. We welcome Todd Ickes as our speaker this weekend. Todd is the founder of Reclaim Ministries and an active member of Aspen Ridge Church. If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Todd will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.

Aspen Ridge Church leadership is pleased to announce important developments alongside our “Live It Out” initiative. You may read about these on our church website, located under the “Blog” tab. Next week we will thank and honor Bob Blake for his role as Director of Small Groups, and welcome Eric Krajewski into this role.

Join us for prayer on Sunday mornings, downstairs in the Fireside Room from 10:15 – 10:40 AM. This is a special time to pray for our weekend services and the advance of the gospel. There is also a student-led group meeting during this time; please see Pastor Kreg for details.

If you have anyone in your immediate family (parent, child, grandchild) serving in one of the military branches, please drop off a color 4 x 6 picture, with name and address, to the church office. We (the Waggoner small group) desire to update the military board and reach out to military service members with care packages and prayer.

Our next Men’s Breakfast scheduled for February 10 at 8:00 AM in the Celebration Center will have a special focus on men as husbands (or prospective/future husbands). We will hear a devotional talk from Joe Hall, a current participant in Aspen Ridge Impact Player and with experience in walking alongside Christian marriages in the local church. Please plan to join us and invite a friend!

Thanks to all who are contributing to Live It Out as we intentionally reach out to our community in practical and loving ways. To contribute, note “Live It Out” on or with your gift.

Gifts (pledged and unpledged) received to date:     $110,747
Remaining pledged amount:                                      $ 27,449

DV8 will be doing a new winter camp March 2-4 for middle school, put on through Converge Rocky Mountain. The signups have started, and money is due by February 11. Stop by the student center to pick up a flyer and info, or email Pastor Kreg.

A Christian polling firm (Barna) tells us that nearly 13 million women attend church alone on any given Sunday. If you find yourself, or someone you know, in a spiritually diverse marriage, we have a ladies small group called WISDoM that meets on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 9:00 AM in room 202. Our group studies Scripture to help us understand God’s place for us and share our experiences in keeping faith. Contact Julie at [email protected] if you’d like more information.

In the coming weeks, Pastor Jeff will address the general topic of the Christian church in relationship to her leaders. Have you ever wondered how leaders are selected and for what they are responsible? The next few weeks will provide practical instruction for how to relate with and toward leaders.

Dinner is served at 5:30 PM on Wednesday nights. This week, our menu includes meatball sandwiches, salad and dessert for $2.50/person or $10/family. We would love to meet you there.

What IF we followed God with perseverance instead of insecurity? Come be a part of the two-day If:Gathering 2018 conference at Ascent Church in Evergreen to worship and study God’s Word.
