The Height of Faith – Perfection
Hebrews 7:11-19
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Definition of perfection:

The Big Idea: Perfection is attainable through the priestly work of our “Melchizedek.”

  • The old covenant does not lead to perfection.
  • The new covenant does lead to perfection.

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: A perfectionist lives by many unspoken rules: I must never make a mistake. I must never fail. I must play it safe so I always succeed. My children must be perfect, too, or I’ll look bad.

This is a grievous problem for many. Discuss.

Digging Deeper:

  1. This passage is, indeed, about perfection (7:11,19). Jesus exhorts us to “be perfect,” and there is a human striving that marks most people. Yet, this is also a troubling and difficult concept…why?
  2. How does one know that the Old Testament law could not lead to perfection? Compare Hebrews 7:11 with 8:10.
  3. The new covenant (Hebrews 9:15) is also described as a better covenant (Hebrews 7:22). The new covenant is found in Jeremiah 31:31-4. How is the new covenant different…and better…than the old covenant law?
  4. The author of Hebrews speaks about purification (Hebrews 9:14), sanctification (Hebrews 10:10) and perfection (Hebrews 10:14). What do these mean, and how are they realized?

Taking it Home: The author of Hebrews describes perfection as drawing near to God (7:19). It does not mean one has been, or even can be, without fault or sin. In fact, the presence of fault or blemish or deficiency in your life can be an opportunity to let Christ be your Savior and Lord. Draw near to Him today!

If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center.

We appreciate the men in our lives…fathers, husbands, brothers and friends…and we celebrate you today. All men are invited to stop by the table in the lobby for a small gift of appreciation.

As part of our Summer Refresh schedule, we want to take a night to celebrate with a fun evening of music and food in the beautiful outdoors of Evergreen. On Saturday, July 8, starting at 5:30 PM, we will gather together outside for a meal. Meat, drinks and paper goods will be provided by the church; please bring a side dish or dessert to share. At 6:30 PM, a concert will follow from our friend, Danny Byram. Please brings chairs and blankets to settle in and enjoy the music. Mark your calendar to join us for this refreshing night!

Our Congregational Business Meeting will be held on Sunday, June 25 at 10:00 AM. The Properties Ministry Team has a proposal regarding building upgrades to present to the congregation, which is endorsed by the Elder Board and will require a vote. The motion will be as follows: “The Elders move that we accept the recommendation of the Properties Ministry Team to replace the deteriorating wood siding of the church building with new low maintenance stucco, fiber cement and stone siding materials. Additionally, that we authorize the Church Treasurer to secure a loan, not to exceed $250,000 to finance the project.” Please join us for this important decision.

Ladies, please join us in honoring the bride-to-be, Rylie Kilgore, on Sunday, June 25 at 2:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Please contact Betsy Wilking at 303.249.2610 or [email protected] for more information.
