MESSAGE NOTES

The Height of Faith – Friendship with God
Hebrews 11:4-22
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

The Big Idea: Abraham became a friend of God by faith.

  • Faith involves response to the call of God, v. 8.
  • Faith means alien-identity in a foreign environment, v. 9
  • Faith includes reliance upon the promises of God, v. 10.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Think about a longstanding relationship you have with a good friend. In what ways are the qualities of a healthy friendship showing up in your relationship with God?

Digging Deeper:

  1. God extended a call to Abraham. Abraham’s life was marked by a sense of calling and destiny. In what ways is our company of faith marked by calling? How about you?
  2. Abraham realized he was a pilgrim in a foreign land, an alien and stranger. Where do you need to resist worldly values and not get too comfortable in this world?
  3. Abraham left one city in search of another… the city of God. Describe God’s city. How are you living for the city which really does have foundations?

Taking it Home: James Boice said “What does it mean to be in the world as a Christian?… It means that we are to mingle with and get to know non-Christians, to make friends with them and enter into their lives in such a way that we begin to infect them with the gospel, rather than their infecting us with their outlook.” How can you make friends for God’s kingdom this week?

NEWCOMERS RECEPTION

If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.

SWEDEN SHOW & TELL TOUR

Aspen Ridge welcomes the Sweden Show & Tell Tour through Converge Worldwide to our Saturday evening service this weekend. We will enjoy an evening of indie-pop music, worship music, teaching, preaching, sharing and networking. This team is from Sweden under the leadership of John van Dinther and Jenny Wahlström, who are part of the lead team in the New Life Network.

ASPEN RIDGE CONSTRUCTION

Thank you for your patience as our church building is undergoing extensive upgrades and renovations. If you are interested in reading more, check out our website or Facebook page. Please note that our playground may not be safely accessible during portions of this remodel, and kids and parents are asked to observe signage in that area for your safety.

BUILDING COMMITMENT

In the coming weeks, (God-willing) our construction upgrades will be complete. Leadership would like to dedicate ourselves and this ministry to the Lord in a fresh, new way. We will set apart the weekend of October 21/22 for a “Building Commitment,” including prayer in our patio area after our Saturday service and in-between our Sunday services. Gather with us in a prayer circle, believing that God uses prayer as a means of connecting us to His plans and purposes.

LIVE IT OUT

Thanks to all who are contributing to Live It Out as we intentionally reach out to our community in practical and loving ways. To contribute, note “Live It Out” on or with your gift. Gifts (pledged and unpledged) received to date:      $102,052
Remaining pledged amount:                                       $ 34,384

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY LUNCHEON

Let’s talk about Children’s Ministry! If you are volunteering, or interested in volunteering, there will be a training luncheon on Sunday, October 22, in the Fellowship Hall from 12:00 – 1:00 PM. We’ll bring the lunch – you bring the ideas!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER

Dinner is served at 5:30 PM on Wednesday nights. This week, our menu includes tacos/burritos and dessert for $2.50/person or $10/family. All are welcome.

SOUP’S ON

As the weather is starting to cool, Aspen Ridge Church has in mind to experiment with some warm dinner options following the Saturday evening service, possibly monthly. If you are interested in supporting this initiative, you could be a soup/stew/chili-maker and/or help serve. We would like to host a trial-run on November 4 and are looking for interested parties. Please contact Jodie Cates at 303.250.3852 or [email protected]

ASPEN HOLLOW: TRUNK-OR-TREAT

Trunk sign-ups begin this weekend! We want to fill the lower lot with decorated vehicles for our October 31 trunk-or-treat as an act of love towards our community. The event takes place from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Candy donations are also welcome (nut-free candy encouraged)!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Get ready to make an impact in a child’s life! We will be filling boxes with school supplies and toys to send to a child who may never have received a gift. The shoebox will also send the good news of Jesus. Boxes will be available in the lobby beginning the weekend of October 7/8 and must be returned no later than Sunday, November 12.

PRAYER INVITATION

Please join us for prayer downstairs in the Fireside Room from 10:15 – 10:40 AM on Sunday mornings. This is a special time to pray for our weekend services, the fulfillment of the Great Commission and the advance of the gospel. There is also a student-led group meeting during this time; please see Pastor Kreg for details.
