The Height of Faith – The Race of Life
Hebrews 12:1-3
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Question: What difference does a “cloud of witnesses” make in the way you live?

  • A cloud of witnesses means you DIVEST.
  • A cloud of witnesses means you RUN.
  • A cloud of witnesses means you FOCUS.
  • A cloud of witnesses means you CONSIDER.

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: Think about different types of races about which you have interest. How is human life like a race? Describe where you think you are (beginning, middle, end) and how it’s going in your race.

Digging Deeper:

  1. Some things must be removed or abandoned if we are to run effectively. There may be “good” things (ie, sweater, coat) that slow down a runner. What are some good things that trip you up?
  2. In addition to anything that hinders, we are to lay aside sin. Wrongdoing and law-breaking may have an addictive power over human beings. How do we lay this aside?
  3. On the one hand, we are to run in the race of life. On the other hand, we are to have endurance. How do these relate to each other, and which of these do you need to make progress with?
  4. Instead of fixing our attention on a path, or even a boundary marker, we are to fix our attention on a person. Who are we to focus upon and why?
  5. Establish from v. 2 the reason why Jesus endured the cross. What does this say about how we are to run the race of our life?

Taking it Home: Suffering is an inevitable part of the Christian life. Write out Hebrews 12:3 on an index card and commit it to memory. The next time you are tempted to grow weary or lose heart, quote this verse.

If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.

Converge Rocky Mountain (CRM) is prioritizing prayer throughout the month of October. This week, take a special moment to pray for our churches spread across the Rockies, in large metro areas or small rural communities. Ask God to supply the leadership and financial resources needed to carry out their visions. Pray also for our next generation of leaders who are growing in their faith and being prepared to lead the way. Pray for boldness to spread the Gospel and an unshakable desire to stand for truth and righteousness.

As the weather is starting to cool, Aspen Ridge Church has in mind to experiment with some warm dinner options following the Saturday evening service, possibly monthly. Please join us on November 4, immediately following the evening service. A variety of soups will be available, including a kid-friendly option. Contact Jodie Cates at 303.250.3852 or [email protected] for more information.

Did you know there is an international day of prayer for the persecuted church? On Sunday, November 5, people of faith around the world are encouraged to pray for others who are suffering for their Christian profession. Hebrews 13:5 reminds us to pray that persecuted believers will sense God’s presence. We invite you to pray this way and with us and to join our prayer gathering in the fireside room at 10:15 AM.
