MESSAGE NOTES

Human – Beauty: David & Abigail
1 Samuel 25:1b-13
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

The Big Idea: Beauty wins out over a graceless, ugly pattern of life.

  • Beauty in Abigail
  • Beauty in intercession
  • Beauty in love and marriage

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: There is a tension in this story between ugly foolishness and beautiful discretion. Without naming names, can you think of people in your life who are in one or another of these categories?

Digging Deeper:

  1. An important observation in this passage is that Abigail would not let her husband’s foolishness block her from doing the right thing toward David and his men. Apply the idea that your spouse cannot block you from being the kind of person God wants you to be.
  2. Abigail models beauty in intercession toward David. Review the qualities of her appeal and how these qualities resulted in a favorable outcome. When you think of your prayer life, which of these qualities need to be cultivated?
  3. This story describes an honorable courtship culminating in a marriage between David and Abigail. In your opinion, what are some “best practices” for such courtship and marriage vows? How does Aspen Ridge support and promote biblical values related to this?

Taking it Home: Use Philippians 4:8 to evaluate your thought life. In light of this, what can you modify toward making sure the subject of your thoughts are “true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent and worthy of praise?”

NEWCOMERS RECEPTION

If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he will meet you at the Welcome Center.

VIEW FROM THE RIDGE ANNUAL MEETINGS

In an effort to provide opportunities for as many as possible, we will have a time after each service during the weekend of September 17/18 for our annual View from the Ridge. These gatherings allow us to propose and vote on the budget for the new fiscal year (beginning September 1), hear reports from ministry leaders from the past year and envision the year
ahead together, as God leads. If you are a member or a regular attender, we strongly encourage you to attend one of the following meetings:

  • Saturday, September 17 at 7:15 PM
  • Sunday, September 18 at 10:15 AM
  • Sunday, September 18 at 12:00 PM (with potluck lunch)

If you are planning to attend the Sunday potluck lunch, please bring a main dish and/or a salad/side/dessert to share. Paper goods and drinks will be provided.

PARENTING WEEKEND

Parents, we know it’s tough raising kids in today’s culture. We want to help. During the weekend of September 24/25, we’ll be focusing on parenting topics in our regular services. We’ll also have some mini-sessions at RidgeFest, designed to help parents with kids – from toddlers to teens. There are also plans in the works for a parenting-focused small group. Contact Maryjean Fowler or Debbie Stewart for more information.

Q&A TIME BETWEEN SERVICES

Beginning September 25, there will be a question and answer time from 10:20 – 10:35 AM, between Sunday services. In conjunction with Parenting Weekend, this first Q&A time will be hosted by our Children’s Ministry leaders, alongside Todd Ickes of Reclaim Ministries. Feel free to bring up any questions you may have, related to the weekend’s message.

BAPTISM WEEKEND

Our next baptism opportunity will be during the weekend of September 10/11. If you are interested in participating, please contact the church office to schedule a pastoral interview.

ANNUAL COOK TEAMS DINNER

We would like to invite all present and returning cook teams (and all who might be interested in joining a cook team) to dinner on Wednesday, August 31, at 5:30 PM in the Celebration Center. Please contact Maria by August 29 at 303.993.9358 or [email protected] to reserve your spot. We will be honoring those that served meals last year and discussing opportunities for new volunteers. Invite a friend, and see how God will use you in service in the upcoming year!

DV8 HAPPENINGS

There will be a CIY MIX Share Night & Open House on Thursday, September 1 at 6:00 PM, in the Student Center. If you are interested in student ministry or would like to hear about the students’ experiences at CIY MIX, please join us for this event. We will return to our regular fall
schedule starting September 7/8.

RIDGEFEST VENDOR REGISTRATION

On Saturday, September 24, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, we’ll be opening up the back parking lot to local vendors, complete with family games, food sales to benefit our DV8 Student Ministries and a whole lot of fun! Online vendor registration is now open on our website, so feel free to sign up for a free table at the event. Begin praying about a neighbor that you might invite to one of our biggest events of the year!
