Where We Stand – The Holy Spirit
John 16:4b-11
Hunter Headley/Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Question: How is it an advantage that Jesus goes away?

  •  Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to show our need for a Savior.
  •  Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to live in us.
  •  Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to produce Christian character.

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: In The Christian Agnostic, Leslies Weatherhead says, “Let us be realistic and acknowledge that thousands of truly devout and sincere Christian people find little or no place for the Holy Spirit in their thinking.” Discuss.

Digging Deeper:

  1. God the Holy Spirit is working in our community and world to convict regarding sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:8). How does this truth inform our mission toward our neighbors, community and world?
  2. The Holy Spirit lives in us as a seal of our identity as God’s children (Ephesians 4:30). What kind of confidence and assurance does this give you in life? How can you avoid grieving the Holy Spirit?
  3. Discuss what it means to walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16; 5:25). How is walking with the Spirit analogous to taking a walk with a friend or family member?

Taking It Home: Why don’t you take a walk with God’s Spirit this week, and remember to pray for your neighbors when you do?

Pastor Jeff and Hunter Headley, our Director of Student Ministries, will share speaking responsibilities this weekend. If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Hunter will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, Pastor Jeff and his wife, Mary will meet you at the Welcome Center in the entryway.

We are continuing our Winter Series this weekend as we delve into what we believe, as a church, about the Holy Spirit. There are still Statement of Faith cards in the media stands, if you have not yet received one. Feel free to take one of these and pray through the changes, as we will be voting to update the statement at the conclusion of the series in March.

Aspen Ridge makes a concerted and intentional effort to fold individuals into small group life. We have recently added a small group on Monday Evenings in Conifer, Wednesday Evenings in Evergreen, and Sunday Evenings in Bailey. If you are interested in being a part of a small group please let us know on our communication card.

The Gathering in February will take a look at the attributes of God. Have you ever tried to understand who God is, and what He is like? John Powell will lead us through a thoughtful and inspirational look at some of the many attributes of God.

The next freezer prep will be Tuesday, March 3. The cost is $12 per meal and advance payment is required to reserve your spot. There is a maximum of 2 of each menu item (20 meals). The menu selections and further information are available on the church website. Space is limited, and payment and order must be received by Monday, February 16. Please contact Michelle Schroeder at [email protected] for questions or to reserve a spot with your menu selections.

Our Sunday morning Women of Faith small group is working on a service project and could use our help! They are collecting plastic grocery bags to make waterproof mats for the homeless. These mats are greatly appreciated by those who need them. If you have any to donate, please drop them off in the church office.

Our dates for VBS in the summer of 2015 will be June 8-12. Our theme is “Jump In,” a high-energy, praise-loaded, custom curriculum featuring Go Fish. Please mark your calendars and begin to pray for this exciting community outreach event!

Thank you to Mike Fuester for his hard work and beautiful craftsmanship on the new student coffee bar! With a new aspect to make the Student Center even more comfortable, we have more students than ever before coming to learn about Jesus. Thanks also to those who have donated items that make the space appealing to teenagers and to the church body for your willingness to let us make our new space attractive to students in our community!
