Words to Build a Life On – Love Your Enemies
Matthew 5:43-48
Hunter Headley

  • Why Jesus’ statement was so unique.
  • What the Pharisees did with the laws (Leviticus 19:18).
  • How we handle our enemies in today’s world.
  • To be “sons of God” is to be…
  • To be “perfect” is to be…
  • So, how do we actually love our enemies?

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

Digging Deeper:

  1. Why was what Jesus said in this passage (Matthew 5:43-48) so radical?
  2. What did the religious leaders of the day have a tendency to do with God’s commandments?
  3. Even though we don’t face the same physical dangers as the people of Jesus’ day, why don’t we love more consistently – especially our enemies?
  4. When we hate someone, we naturally de-humanize them. Where do you find this true in your own life?

This weekend Pastor Jeff and Mary are in Grand Junction. They are dropping off their son David as a new college student at Colorado Mesa University. Pastor Jeff will be back in the office on Monday, August 11. We would like to welcome our Director of Student Ministries, Hunter Headley as our speaker today. If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Hunter will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he will meet you at the Welcome Center in the entryway.

On a regular and rotating basis, we review and modify our name tag list to keep it current with our regular attendance. In this process, it is possible that we have made some errors. If this is the case, please contact the church office, and thank you for your patience.

Please take a moment to check the Lost and Found for any personal items you may have there. It is located downstairs next to the elevator. All items remaining will be donated after August 18.

Our Saturday morning Precepts class will start its next session on September 6 at 8:30 AM in the Book of Hebrews, Part 2. The first two classes are a review of Hebrews, Part 1 (Chapters 1-4). Want to join in? Call Dottie Manchette at 303.697.9141 to order a workbook.

Stay tuned for details and mark your calendars for September 14. We will be celebrating the past year with lunch together, followed by important information on the upcoming year. Join your church family in this time of reflection and planning, so that we may fulfill our vision and mission to serve Christ in this community.

As a church family, it is always an exciting time when we are able to stand behind parents as they commit to raising their children in Christ. If you are interested in being involved in our next Parent/Child Dedication weekend, please contact Pastor Jeff or the church office by the end of August.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Children’s Progression Weekend, August 23 and 24! We celebrate the new school year commencing and kids graduating up to the next grade level in Children’s Church! All children, age 2 through 5th grade will begin and end in the KidZone during church services. They will no longer be released from the Celebration Center. This change will ensure a secure check-in procedure for all the children and will give them more time for worship and Bible Lessons.

Do you know what’s going on in your church? Did you know that we have ministry teams, which are constantly serving and sharing? Check out The Gathering during the month of August, where many of these teams will be highlighted and will be discussing their roles within the body. You may find that you’d like to get involved in what they are doing! Join us downstairs at 9:00 AM each Sunday morning.

Our regular meetings for DV8 will begin with the school year on August 20 for middle school (Wednesdays) and August 21 for high school (Thursdays). Please join us at 6:30 PM, and bring a friend! Connect with us on Facebook to stay up-to-date on current news and to see pictures from our summer of fun!

This weekend after the Sunday morning service, there will be an appreciation meal and organizational meeting for the Wednesday night dinner cook teams. You are invited if you are interested in being on a cook team or have been on a cook team in the past. This ministry has the potential to reach many lives within our community. Join us to see how you can get involved!

There will be new leadership for our annual ‘Taste of Christmas’ women’s ministry gathering this year, and we would value your input. We will be brainstorming everything from the name to the details for the upcoming event on November 10. If you would like to be involved, please contact Char Carlson through Churchteams. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
