Words to Build a Life On – Jesus on Prayer
Matthew 6:5-8
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

The Big Idea: How are we to pray?

  • Our MOTIVE should not be for recognition by others, v. 5.
  • Our MARK should be our father, who is in secret, v. 6.
  • Our MANNER should not be one of manipulation, v. 7-8.

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?

My Story: These words of Jesus have to do with relating to God in prayer. We saw a video which featured examples of how believers may direct their words to one another rather than to God. When might you be tempted to pray toward others rather than to God?

Digging Deeper:

  1. Prayer is a way to talk with God (John 15:7; Philippians 4:6-7). It is a means of receiving what God intends to give to us. What place does prayer have among God’s people today…and in your life? Why is public or conversational prayer difficult for many?
  2. There are at least three prominent examples in Scripture of the power of private prayer: Genesis 32:24-9; Daniel 6:10; Matthew 26:26. What are the personal and spiritual advantages of private, personal prayers to God? How can you apply Isaiah 26:20 to your life?
  3. What can you tell God when he already knows everything? Western logic answers “nothing.” However, Jesus answers “everything.” This is because it speaks of God’s capability to hear and give. How does Isaiah (in 65:24) encourage vigorous prayer?

Taking It Home: Do I pray more frequently and more fervently when alone with God than I do in public? Do I love the secret place of prayer? Is my public praying simply the overflow of my private praying?

If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, Pastor Jeff and his wife Mary will meet you at the Welcome Center in the entryway.

Stay tuned for details, and mark your calendars for September 14. We will be celebrating the past year with lunch together, followed by important information on the upcoming year. Join your church family in this time of reflection and vision-casting, so that we may fulfill our mission to serve Christ in this community.

This weekend is our Children’s Progression Weekend! Please remember to check all children in downstairs in the KidZone. We will no longer be dismissing them from the Celebration Center during services.

The Christian life is meant to be lived in community. While God can do amazing things in the life of an individual, joys are multiplied and sorrows are halved as we share them with others. If you have not yet joined a small group, there will be another opportunity to do so in the coming weeks. Our small groups start back up on September 21, and we will have information available on open groups soon. Begin praying about and for your group!

There will be new leadership for our annual ‘Taste of Christmas’ women’s ministry gathering this year, and we would value your input. We will be brainstorming everything from the name to the details for the upcoming event on November 10. If you would like to be involved, please contact Char Carlson at 303.838.2833. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

If you took part in our Churchteams photo session, but have not received your portrait by email, please contact us so that arrangements can be made. Thanks to all of those who participated!

In conjunction with the kick-off of a new school year, our Student Ministries has partnered with church leadership to set apart priority space for our students. In the coming months, the Chapel will be undergoing changes in both name and appearance, to provide a student-friendly area that encourages fellowship and Christian growth. We are excited to see how God will use our student center to allow us to mentor, disciple and spread the love of Christ.

The MOPS Ministry is looking to fill two childcare positions within the MOPPETS childcare program. They meet the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 9:00 – 11:30 AM, September through May.
