The Essentials of Christmas – Joseph
Matthew 1:18-25
Dr. Jeffrey Clark

Joseph’s lineage

Joseph’s betrothal

Joseph’s dream(s)

Joseph as adoptive father

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching,
was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged
or confused you?

My Story: Today our topic has to do with Joseph, the betrothed
husband of Mary, and the adoptive father of Jesus. What kind of
impressions have you had about Joseph, through Christmas traditions
or songs or stories? Review why he is an important person in God’s

Digging Deeper:

  1. The virgin birth is consistently taught in the Scriptures (Matt. 1:16, 18-20, 23). This doctrine explains Jesus as the God-man, the sufficiency of his work on the cross, and that He is the only way to God. Why do an increasing number of people resist the Christian teaching that there is only one way to God?
  2. Joseph’s time of betrothal, especially after he found out Mary was with child, would have been difficult. One misunderstanding believers may have is that hardship and trial is always discipline or judgment from God. This was not the case with Joseph, and may not be the case with you. Discuss.
  3. Everybody can relate to dreams, and they come in all shapes and sizes. However, we heard that Joseph’s dreams had especially to do with bringing our Savior into this world. We also heard that in a multitude of dreams is vanity (Ecc. 5:7). Why are we not to expect God to use our dreams to guide us?

Taking It Home: Joseph reminds us how important it is to TRUST
God, and to DENY OURSELVES as we follow Jesus. Where do you
need to trust, and where do you need to deny yourself?
