Theme: Personal Enrichment to Finish Well

Location: Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Monastery in Santa Barbara, CA March 3-13, 2020

Books & Resources: Books about God and His Attributes (The Holiness of God by R. C. Sproul Jr., The Knowledge of the Holy by A. W. Tozer, Knowing God by J. I. Packer); Books about Prayer (The God Who Hears by Bingham Hunter, The Hour That Changes the World by Dick Eastman, Desiring God by John Piper, The Complete Works of EM Bounds on Prayer, Biblical Exposition of Prayer by James Rosscup); Books about the Christian Life (A Christian View of Spirituality in The Complete Works of Francis Schaeffer vol. 3); Books about Pastoral work (Under the Unpredictable Plant by Eugene Peterson).

Logistics & Schedule: I will spend two days driving to Santa Barbara on the front and on the back end of this prayer retreat.  Further, I will divide my days into seven, one-hour long blocks for prayer.

Mar 4 | Mar 5 | Mar 6 | Mar 7 | Mar 8/9 (off) | Mar 10  | Mar 11 | Mar 12 Mar 13

Hour 1 – The Hour that Changes the World

Hour 2 – Knowing God (10 attributes under the heading “Behold Your God”)

Hour 3 – Prayer & Praying Men (EM Bounds)

Hour 4 – Christian Life (10 units from Piper on Christian Hedonism)

Hour 5 – (Place, What, Time, Length, Position, Definite, Primers, Situations, Testimonies, Bible)

Hour 6 – (Name, Sovereign, Unanswered, Unsaved, Fasting, HS, Miracles, Faith, Maintain, Select)

Hour 7 – Pastoral Prayer (Eugene Peterson’s Under the Unpredictable Plant)

Encouragements: First, I want you to know about this so you can pray with and for me. There will be additional components to my sabbatical that I will tell you about in other, forthcoming, communiques. Second, I want to invite you secure some (or all) of these books as they have been a great help to me in the Christian life. Third, alongside our church leadership, I seek to build a corresponding 40-day prayer emphasis for Aspen Ridge Church. This will begin in March and extend through Easter. It will be aligned with a new series on Romans 9—11 entitled “Coming to Terms with Resistance.”

Stage #1 – Build additional & different prayer opportunities within services. This could include having different kinds of prayers in services, folding prayer opportunities into a window near the end of the service, and having people stand where they are who need prayer.

Stage #2 – Publish content for concerted prayer within small groups. This would provide content and direction for extended and consistent small group prayers throughout church life.

Stage #3 – Provide a prayer meeting on Wednesday Nights at Aspen Ridge Church. This could include Eastman’s the “hour that changed the world.” It could also use rotating leader(s) from Staff and Elders. Further, Awana leaders could give an update on prayer needs, opportunities, and challenges. It would begin on Wednesday, March 4 and conclude on Wednesday, April 8. It will meet from 6:30 to 7:30PM.

Stage #4 – Provide 24-hour prayer vigil (Maundy Thursday 6PM through Good Friday 6PM).

Yours for Enrichment to finish well,

Pastor Jeff
