As You Go… Simon the Magician
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Simon pursues supernatural power in a destructive way.
- Simon’s faith “object” is destructive.
- Simon’s non-saving faith is destructive.
- Simon’s mere amazement is destructive.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: What are your perceptions about magic? Is it simply and purely illusion and sleight of hand? Are there supernatural powers at work that are substantive and powerful?
- Simon practiced magic. The Scriptures are uniformly hostile to divination, sorcery, enchantment, incantations, repeated utterances and witchcraft. Why is this the case?
- Simon has faith, but it appears to be a non-saving faith. On what basis may one arrive at this conclusion from the text? How might non-saving faith be present among your family members or friends?
- Simon was “amazed” at the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit among the apostles (v. 9, 11, 13). However, this amazement did not lead to repentance (see v. 22). How may someone be amazed at the supernatural and not turn toward God’s light?
Taking It Home: Simon’s use of money revealed the true condition of his heart. How does your use of money reveal the true condition of your heart? Aspen Ridge is preparing to offer a Financial Peace University small group this fall…consider who you could invite.
We want to extend a special welcome to visitors and guests, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.
PRE-SERVICE PRAYER TIME
Twenty minutes prior to each service, we will meet for a prayer time with our worship team, audio/visual team and Pastor Jeff in the front of the Celebration Center. This time is open to anyone with a heart for prayer, and you may join in freely with the circle that gathers. We seek God’s will in all matters surrounding our services and those that attend, and we welcome all who wish to participate.
