Acts – Peter on Solomon’s Porch
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: God’s program, apparently thwarted, retains remedial power.
- God’s program to make much of Jesus
- God’s program was apparently thwarted
- God’s program retains remedial power
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Can you think of an occasion when your purposes were thwarted? How did you feel? If you can see the hand of God at work, how did He show His remedial power?
- God’s program involves giving value and prominence to Jesus. Peter uses the term “glorified” to describe God’s plan for Jesus. Itemize the descriptive names given to Jesus by Peter in verses 13-15.
- God’s program was apparently thwarted by Jesus’ audience. In contrast to God’s plan, review the response of the people to Jesus. How does this call attention to human responsibility and culpability for Jesus’ death?
- Peter says that his audience “acted in ignorance” with respect to their rejection of Jesus. Many people are agnostic with respect to the existence of God. Further, most people do not understand who Jesus really is. Discuss.
- God is not thwarted. He has planned all this ahead of time (v. 18). How are human beings to respond to Jesus (v. 19)? What are the three benefits of responding in this way to Jesus? Which of these do you experience, and in what way?
Taking It Home: Repent and turn again. Someone said the largest people group in the world are “nominal” (in name only) Christians. If 75-80% of the world’s Christians are “nominal” (in name only), then one billion need to be awakened out of smug assurance of salvation by biological birthright.
We want to extend a special welcome to visitors and guests, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. Pastor Jeff will meet you at the Welcome Center, where you can also receive a special gift when you turn in a Communication Card.
Please join us in celebrating baptism this weekend with Linda Veal and her granddaughter, Natalie Veal. There will be cake offered in the Lobby for a time of fellowship and encouragement with these individuals.
