The Height of Faith - Jesus’ Higher Priesthood
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: In the order of Melchizedek, Jesus is higher than the Levitical Priesthood.
Question: How is Jesus Christ in the order of Melchizedek?
- Melchizedek is a “type” of Christ
- Melchizedek is a “type” of Christ’s character
- Melchizedek is a “type” of Christ’s qualifications
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: The author of Hebrews suggests that teaching about Melchizedek is in the category of elementary Christian doctrines (compare Hebrews 5:10 with Hebrews 6:1). What is your relationship to the Old Testament? How well do you know the Bible stories there?
- There is a dramatic account of Abraham rescuing his kidnapped nephew and family, and then meeting a person named Melchizedek, in Genesis 14. Discuss Abraham’s heroism and worship.
- The author of Hebrews describes Melchizedek as a “type” of Christ. Just what is a “type” and how does it work in the Bible?
- Melchizedek is a “type” that represents Christ’s character. What are these character qualities and why are they important in our Savior?
- Melchizedek is a “type” that represents Christ’s qualifications. Review these qualifications and discuss why they are important for our Savior.
Taking it Home: Let me invite you to take the “tithe” challenge. If you are not currently tithing to your local Christian church, take a step of faith and begin doing so for one month. At the end of the month review your relationship with God and your financial condition. Assess and
discuss with a trusted Christian friend.
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he will meet you at the Welcome Center.
LET’S GET TOGETHER
Because we know that family schedules change in the summer, Aspen Ridge will experiment with a modified “Summer Refresh schedule” in 2017. Beginning the weekend of June 3/4, we will suspend our Saturday evening services and offer the regular Sunday morning services of 9:00 and 10:45 AM. We do see an important future for our Saturday Night Service, and will return to our regular schedule (including Saturday Night Service at 6:00 PM) the weekend after Labor Day: September 9/10. In the meantime, we see this as an opportunity to “get together” with one another on Sundays this summer!
SUMMER REFRESH EVENT!
As part of our Summer Refresh schedule, we want to take a night to celebrate and have a fun evening of music and food in the beautiful outdoors of Evergreen. On Saturday July 8th, starting at 5:30 pm here at church, we will get together outside for a meal, followed at 6:30 by a concert from our friend Danny Byram. Look for more details coming soon, and mark your calendar to join us Saturday, July 8th for this refreshing night!
June 4 will be our Move-Up Weekend in Children’s and Student Ministries. Congratulations to all our kids and students!
We are accepting nominations through Sunday, June 12 for candidates to be considered to join the Elder Board. Forms are available in the church office. Contact an elder with any questions you may have.

LIVE IT OUT
Live It Out is a strategic initiative toward fulfilling a vision that every person in our community would experience the love of God in a practical way through Aspen Ridge Church. This involves building and mobilizing our small group network toward service projects in our community. One of our aims is to hire a “Director of Small Groups” who would continue to build our small group ministry. Norm Lewis is the chairman of this search team with Pastor Jeff and Michelle Force. We have received several applications for this position. We covet your prayers as we begin to identify those who may be the best fit for this important ministry.
UPDATE IN CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
We are pleased to announce that Debbie Stewart is moving from the Assistant Director position to the Interim Director position in Children’s Ministry. Also, Meredith Zouski is stepping into a Summer Intern role. We are excited about this transition and look forward to a successful VBS and a continued strength in our Children’s Ministry!
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
VBS is June 5-9, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Our theme is "Maker Fun Factory: Created by God and Built for a Purpose." Online registration is available for registering children. Check out our website and get your kids registered before classes fill up! If you have volunteered to serve (or
would like to!), there is a VBS Orientation meeting immediately following the 10:45 AM service this Sunday, 5/28 in the Fellowship Hall.
DV8 is combining middle and high school for the summer. We will now meet on Thursday nights for both groups. June 1 begins our Back Porch nights and we will meet from 6:00 - 9:00 PM. We would love to see you there!
