Lend Me Your Hope – Hope Beyond “I Do”
1 Peter 3:1-7
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: Bring hope into marriage by honoring your spouse.
- Wives, honor your own husbands, v. 1-6.
- Husbands, seek to understand your wives, v. 7.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: If you are married, what was it about your spouse that attracted you to him or her? If you are not married, what are some of the best qualities in a spouse?
- The passage begins with “likewise” (v. 1) toward wives and continues with “likewise” (v. 7) toward husbands. What does this “likewise” refer to? What does mutual submission look like in a healthy relationship (Ephesians 5:21)?
- What are some indicators that a wife is living in submission to her husband?
- On a scale of 1-10 (10 being hardest), how difficult would it be for a woman to be “without a word” when living with an unbelieving husband? Why?
- Name 3-4 things that a husband needs to know in order to be understanding of his wife. List 3-4 things that need to be done for him to consider his actions to honor his wife.
- How would a person know if his/her prayer was being hindered?
Taking it Home: Tim and Kathy Keller state the following in “Decision Making and Gender Roles”: The husband’s authority (like the Son’s over us) is never used to please himself, but only to serve the interests of his wife. A wife is never to be merely compliant, but is to use her resources to empower. A wife is not to give her husband unconditional obedience. Assuming the role of headship is only done for purposes of ministering to your wife and family. Review these roles prayerfully, discuss where appropriate. If married, write down four qualities you appreciate most about your mate; admit one thing you would most like to change about yourself.
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you, and we invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he and his wife, Mary, will meet you at the Welcome Center.
Aspen Ridge will have a “Baptism Weekend” on February 27-28. If you have made a faith commitment to Jesus Christ and would like to explore participating in this ordinance, please be in touch with the pastoral staff.
15 MINUTES TO CHANGE THE WORLD
15 Minutes to Change the World will be held in our Celebration Center between our worship services on Sundays. We will give direction to prayer between 10:20 and 10:35 AM for the weeks leading up to Easter. We would like to challenge all of our adult small groups to participate in this time of prayer. Our strength is in God and our unity as the body of Jesus Christ. We believe now is the time to prioritize prayer, coming to God with an expectant heart to receive all that He has for us. Won’t you join us?
