Follow Me - The Beginning
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
Question: What makes the Christian faith different from other religious movements?
- Jesus’ death was confirmed by witnesses, Mark 15:42-47.
- Jesus’ resurrection was not suspected, Mark 16:1-8.
- Jesus’ resurrection was witnessed by hundreds, 1 Corinthians 15:3-6.
The Big Idea: Jesus really did rise from the dead!
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Some place Jesus among many great religious leaders of history (Abraham, Moses, Mohammed and Buddha). What do Christians believe about Jesus that sets Christianity apart from other religious leaders and movements?
- One alternate theory, sometimes called the swoon theory, denies that Jesus actually died on the cross. How does Mark corroborate Jesus’ actual death on the cross (15:42-47)?
- If the disciples expected Jesus to rise from the dead, a case could be made for some sort of “wish fulfillment” in their subsequent experiences, which could erode their credibility as witnesses. How does Mark illustrate that they did NOT expect a resurrection (16:1-8)?
- If personal eyewitnesses could not be consulted, there could be room for legend to grow around the resurrection of Christ. However, the Apostle Paul appeals to tradition he received (1 Corinthians 15:3) and eyewitnesses to appearances of Christ (1 Corinthians 15:5-8). How is this important in countering views that Christ’s resurrection was merely legendary?
Taking it Home: In 1 Corinthians 15, the Apostle Paul states that if Jesus did NOT rise from the dead, our entire faith is fallacious (v. 14) and ineffective (v. 17), preaching is without value (v. 14), Christian testimony is false (v. 15), no sins have been forgiven (v. 17) and believers have perished without any Christian hope (v. 18). The conclusion is that, apart from this event, Christians are the most miserable of all people (v. 19). How does Christ’s resurrection serve your genuine and fruitful Christian life?
If you are visiting, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff will be available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, he and his wife, Mary, will meet you at the Welcome Center.
TOWN HALL MEETING
Do you have questions about the 5-Year Proposals that have been circulating in the past few weeks? Maybe you have ideas or issues that need to be addressed in order to help fulfill God’s vision for our church. Our upcoming town hall meetings are excellent avenues of discussion for these topics. Join us for our third and final meeting in this series: November 15 at 9:00 AM. Childcare and refreshments will be provided. We are seeking full participation from our church body, as the proposals may influence all of church life, including our values, culture, direction, programming, facilities and staffing. Will you please prioritize this meeting and bring an expectant heart? Check your email for a link to a set of FAQs to browse beforehand!
We are happy to celebrate with Julie Daigneault as she is baptized in our Sunday morning worship service.
