Square One - The Next Three Days
Dr. Jeffrey Clark
The Big Idea: In days 4-6, God adds fullness into an “already-structured” creation.
- Day 4 – God appoints lights to separate day from night, v. 14-19.
- Day 5 – God creates life in sea and sky, v. 20-23.
- Day 6 – God creates life for the land, v. 24-25.
Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you?
My Story: Jesus spoke of an evil spirit who found an empty house swept and in order… and then inhabited the empty house with seven other spirits (see Matthew 12:43-45). When have you seen lives that appear to be orderly and kept, but lack fullness and are vulnerable to
- God creates basic order to the universe in the first 3 days, then fills that order in the next 3 days. Review how day one relates to day four, day two relates to day five, and day three relates to day six.
- In the Ancient Near East, the sun and moon were considered gods. In a direct challenge to these “gods,” Moses wrote that God created the greater and lesser lights. Read Romans 1:18-23 to review how humans reject the glory of God and worship creatures rather than the Creator.
- God is a worker. He displays significant work and creativity in the six days of creation. How does this bring dignity and value to work of all kinds? How does this challenge a culture that devalues or belittles hard work?
- God consistently says “it is good” at the end of each creative day. As Christians, we want to guard against thinking that creation is something other than good. Read 1 Timothy 4:1-5 and apply to your setting.
Taking It Home: Only God can pour fullness into the basic structure of life. Read the story of Nicodemus in John 3 and note what Jesus teaches about our need for spiritual life. Tell your faith story with members of your group in anticipation for telling it to all in need.
If you are visiting today, we want to extend a special welcome to you and invite you to an informal reception immediately following our worship service. On Saturday, Pastor Jeff is available in the Celebration Center, and on Sunday, Pastor Jeff and his wife Mary will meet you at the Welcome Center in the entryway.

Eric and Kara Coe, Campus Crusade for Christ, St. Petersburg Russia
Please pray that their four day team leaders conference would be encouraging, refreshing, and inspiring. Also, that they can work together with leaders and wrestle with some of the challenges facing their ministry to the students of Russia. They will be attending a spiritual retreat and will be renewing their vision for ministry. Pray that this time would be very
meaningful, and their leaders would leave encouraged, refreshed and full of hope.
